Meals On Wheels of Boulder County
Meals on Wheels GOES GREEN

Meals on Wheels of Boulder has been looking for ways to send fresh organic produce to enhance its home-delivered meals.  Recently, local growers have stepped forward to help.

An anonymous individual has donated a summer share of produce from Beyond Organic Farm/CSA, a partnership between several CU-Boulder students and local farmer John MacKenzie.  That share is frequently augmented by donations directly from Beyond Organic Farm.

Foothills Gardening Group recently began delivering local organically grown lettuce to the Boulder nonprofit.  The group is composed of neighbors who have several community garden plots in North Boulder.  Kay Anderson, founder of Wellness for All, launched the effort last month.  "My goal is to find ways to make organic food accessible to everyone," said Anderson.

These two groups join other local food providers who have been supporting Meals on Wheels of Boulder for many years with in-kind donations:  Community Food Share and Breadworks.  In addition to food, birthday floral arrangements are sent to each client thanks to Boulder Garden Club.  And each week, flowers, provided by Sturtz & Copeland, are delivered to clients.

Introducing: Project Homecoming

Hospital homecomings can be stressful, especially when they follow an illness, surgery, or an accident.  Project Homecoming is a short-term meal delivery program from Meals on Wheels of Boulder to help patients make the transition from hospital to home.

  • WHY:  As many as 40% of all patients may not know where their first meals will come from once they’re home.   Many are sent home with new dietary restrictions which may be difficult and confusing.  Receiving healthy meals can help smooth the transition,  relieve anxiety and help you get well faster.
  • WHO:  For patients of any age or income level being released from hospitals or rehabilitation facilities to their homes in the Boulder area who do not have immediate plans to provide food for the first five days.
  • WHAT:  A hot meal, delivered at noon, prepared to meet any dietary restrictions – for five days.
  • WHEN:  Volunteer drivers will deliver a nutritious noon meal weekdays to patients, with frozen meals available for weekends.
  • COST:  Free for five days – no strings attached!
